Adding Products, Categories, Payment Methods

Adding Products, Categories & Payment Methods in WooCommerce

Now that your WooCommerce plugin is installed and your e-commerce site is up and running, it’s time to fill your store with actual products, organize them with categories, and enable payment methods so customers can buy from you with ease.

In this tutorial, we’ll walk through:

  • How to add products (physical, digital, variable)
  • How to create and manage product categories
  • How to enable and set up payment methods like PayPal, Stripe, and more

Let’s make your online store ready to sell!

🛍️ Step 1: Adding Products in WooCommerce

🧾 Add a New Product

  1. Go to WordPress Dashboard > Products > Add New
  2. Enter:
    • Product Name
    • Product Description (long, detailed)
    • Product Short Description (used on shop page)
    • Price (regular and sale price)
    • Product Image (main photo)
    • Product Gallery (extra images)

📦 Choose Product Type

  • Simple Product – One version, one price (e.g. a book)
  • Variable Product – Multiple variations (e.g. T-shirt in different sizes or colors)
  • Downloadable Product – Digital file (PDF, MP3, etc.)
  • Virtual Product – No shipping required (e.g. service or consultation)

Example:
A “Yoga Mat” could be a simple product.
A “T-shirt” with sizes S, M, L is a variable product.

🗂️ Step 2: Creating Product Categories & Tags

Categories help organize your shop and improve navigation. Tags help customers find related products.

To Add a Category:

  1. Go to Products > Categories
  2. Enter:
    • Category Name (e.g. “Accessories”)
    • Optional: Parent category if you’re creating subcategories
    • Category image for visual store themes
  3. Click Add New Category

🏷 To Add Tags:

You can add tags on the product page or under Products > Tags. Use descriptive keywords (e.g., “cotton,” “eco-friendly,” “limited edition”).

🧠 Good structure = better user experience = more conversions!

💳 Step 3: Setting Up Payment Methods

WooCommerce supports multiple payment gateways. The most popular and beginner-friendly are:

PayPal Standard (Free & Fast)

  1. Go to WooCommerce > Settings > Payments
  2. Enable PayPal and click Manage
  3. Enter your PayPal email address
  4. Save changes

Customers will be redirected to PayPal to complete their payment.

Stripe (Credit/Debit Card Payments)

  1. Install the WooCommerce Stripe Payment Gateway plugin from Plugins > Add New
  2. Go to WooCommerce > Settings > Payments > Stripe
  3. Enable it and enter your API keys (from your Stripe account)
  4. Save changes

Stripe lets customers pay directly on your site without redirection.

💰 Other Payment Options

You can also enable:

  • Cash on Delivery (COD) – Great for local stores
  • Bank Transfer (BACS) – Accept payments directly to your bank
  • Razorpay / UPI (for India) – Use local gateways via plugins

Task for Today

  1. Add at least 3 products to your store
  2. Create 2–3 categories (like “Men,” “Women,” “Accessories”)
  3. Add a product with variants (e.g., size or color)
  4. Enable at least one online payment method (PayPal or Stripe)
